Testing a slot: force the rounds instead of spinning for hours

Volt team·7 min read·Oct 24, 2026

The short version. A free spins round that triggers once in 200 spins takes a long time to see by hand, and the max win might never come. Test a slot by forcing the rounds you need: a loss, each win tier, the feature trigger and retrigger, the win cap, and every bet mode. Then check each one at phone and desktop size, and keep the round IDs: Stake Engine's reviewers ask for them.

Why spinning by hand doesn't work

A slot's interesting rounds are rare on purpose. If the feature comes once in 200 spins and the max win is 1 in several million, you can spin all afternoon and see the feature a couple of times and the win cap never. You'll also change a timing, spin again, and wait for the feature all over again. Testing by chance is slow, and it misses exactly the rounds players remember.

The fix is the same in every serious slot workflow: pick the round you want to see, then watch it. How you do that depends on how the game's math works. On Stake Engine every round is pre-simulated (a "book"), so forcing a round just means playing a chosen book; see how a Stake Engine game works.

The rounds to force, every time

RoundWhat to check
A lossNothing celebrates; the balance drops by the bet; the next spin is ready straight away.
A small win (under the bet)It shows as a win, counts up from zero, and doesn't trigger a big-win celebration.
Each win tier (big, super, mega…)The right celebration at the right threshold, held for the right time, with the amount counting up correctly.
The feature triggerThe scatter landing, the intro, the number of free spins, any "press to continue", the outro and its total.
A retriggerExtra spins added and shown; the counter and the total stay right.
The win cap (max win)The round stops at the cap and says so; the rules screen states the same cap.
Each bet mode, including a bonus buyThe real cost is shown, a confirmation appears where it's required, and the round plays the mode's own math.

Watch each round at every size

Most slot play happens on phones in portrait, and many layout bugs only exist there: a logo covering the top row, buttons off the edge, a win amount clipped by the frame. Play each forced round at a desktop size and a phone size, ideally side by side, and in landscape and tablet if you support them. A round that's fine on a laptop and broken on a phone is still broken.

Step through, don't squint

Big rounds are fast. When something looks off, slow down: replay the round, then step through it one event at a time (reels stop, symbols win, the multiplier lands, the counter ticks). Most front-end bugs in slots are ordering bugs, an animation starting before the previous one finished or a total shown before the last win was added, and they're only visible step by step.

Then the things around the round

  • Reload in the middle of a winning round: it should resume with the same bet and show the win.
  • Currencies: a JPY bet, a sub-cent win, and any social currency your platform uses. Number fonts often miss a currency's symbols.
  • Fast play and autoplay: still legible, and autoplay asks for confirmation if the platform requires it.
  • The rules screen: every pay, every mode's RTP and cost, the max win, how the feature triggers.

Keep the round IDs

When you find a good example of each round, write down its ID. Stake Engine's reviewers may ask for event IDs per mode for a normal win, a big win, the win cap, a loss and a bonus trigger, so they can replay them. Collecting them while you test saves a second pass before you submit.

How Volt does it

In Volt's Build workspace, Screens lists everything the game can show: live play, a no win, each free spins trigger, every win tier, the biggest round in its books, a bonus buy. Pick one and the next spin plays it, in every open window at once, so Desktop and Phone play the same round side by side. Replay it with R, keep it in Saved rounds with K, or pause and step through it one event at a time.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test free spins without spinning hundreds of times?

Force a round that triggers them. On games whose rounds are pre-simulated, like Stake Engine's, that means playing a book that contains the trigger; tools that list the game's outcomes let you pick it directly.

How do I test the max win of a slot?

Play a win-cap round from the game's books directly. Check that the round stops at the cap, says so, and that the rules screen states the same cap.

Can I force outcomes on Stake Engine's live server?

Engine doesn't document a way to force rounds on the live server. Render specific rounds locally from the books, and use bet replay to show a specific past round.

Which screen sizes should a slot be tested at?

At least a desktop size and a phone in portrait (for example 1920×1080 and 390×844), plus landscape and tablet if the game supports them.
